I’ll keep the basics handy for those “Wait—can I do that?” moments.
Aim for the wear target your provider gave you—commonly 20–22 hours a day. Your trays can only work while you’re wearing them.
Take your trays out for food, gum, and every drink except plain water. Put them straight into their case so they stay safe.
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth once a day, and clean your teeth before you reinsert your trays.
Clean your trays with a soft brush and lukewarm water or an approved aligner cleaner. Hot water can distort the plastic.
Change trays only on the schedule you were prescribed. Don’t jump ahead to “catch up” unless your provider tells you to.
Check in with your provider instead of simply stopping. They may prescribe refinements, more trays, or a long-term retainer.
Please call your orthodontist
Contact the office if a tray is lost, cracked, warped, sharp, or fitting poorly; if an attachment comes off; or if you have severe or worsening pain, swelling, drainage, or fever.
Seek urgent care: trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or major facial or dental trauma.
I keep this guidance grounded in official patient resources. Your own provider’s plan always comes first.
